Mismatch (The First Five Pages)
Mismatch here is a graphic novel I wrote. It’s the beginnings of a super hero comic.
Notes: Heyo everyone! Here’s the stuff I got for first pages so far. The characters in this chapter will mostly be Tanya and Kilo later. For the most part though, it shows off Tanya’s regular life to then her going to gain some new powers. Drew some of it out, as well as the panel layouts.
Color Notes: Use a large variety of colors and just show off your creativity, as each comic in the beginning will focus on one of the main characters. It’s perfect if you do a lot of variety of colors for Tanya.
Page 1: 5 panels
Page and Color Details: Text for all of this is technically Kilo talking, but there is no dialogue box, so it comes off more as caption. The captions are in the bottom middle of the panels except for the last one which I will explain as I go. Mostly dark and light colors for this page and the boxes will be like thought bubbles since this is like a daydream.
Panel 1: Small little box panel to the top left. Shows a hand grabbing onto a black witch’s hat, with a focus on his arm and his hand holding the hat in the darkness surrounding him. I want this to come off as seductive in a way- that power is seductive and tempting.
Kilo: Do you really want this?
Panel 2: Small little panel box to the right of panel 1. Shows a shot of Tanya, only the left side of her face is shown, her eyes closed. The background around her is of her in white light to show off that she hasn’t been tempted yet with power.
Kilo: The power…
Panel 3: Small little panel box to the right of panel 2. Shows a shot of Tanya again, left side of her face. It’s pretty much the same panel as panel 2 but this time, it is only of Cat Witch: with her pale skin, black mask on, purple hair, and her green cat eyes. Emphasis on the eyes the ferocity of it. Like it almost looks like a dragon’s eye, with a bit of light shining into it. The background around her is a little grey now and has been more tempted with power, that she is slowly falling prey to it.
Kilo: A different you?
Panel 4: Small little panel box to the right of panel 3. It shows Kilo’s lower face- his nose, mouth, and clothes. It almost looks like just a white body- I almost want it to be so blinding in white light, that you can’t make much of the details on how he looks. The scenery around him is darkness. His mouth is wide open as he says…
Kilo: In the end…
Panel 5: This is a very complicated image that takes up the majority of the page. I wanted it to be a representation almost of different personalities, so I looked to some multiple different personalities artwork and found what I wanted. So. It’s one big face, but with three faces in it. To the left will be Tanya, in the middle is Kilo hidden amongst her, and to the right is Cat Witch. Body parts: 3 mouths, one nose, and one pair of eyes. The left one is light brown, to show off Tanya and Kilo’s eye whereas the right eye has the mask and the cat eye, but more intense. Scenery is black around the face and the words are all creepy looking and I’m showing you my inspiration since this is very hard to explain.
So ya..like this, but I want the black face to the right and the colorful one to the left. The ghostlikeness can stay in the middle.
Kilo: It is up to you to decide.
Page 2: 1 big picture! Splash page time!
Notes and color: This is a splash page and full-page shot of our main four heroes as regular average Joes! It is Tanya and Oliver at the bottom of the page and Sam and William at the top of the page. Tanya has noticed Oliver and is giving him a curious but confused look while he is looking the other way and blushing. Meanwhile, Sam, who has a small scar on her left cheek and a little one above her left forward, is yelling at William, half angry and half smiling as she tries not to show it, as William has his hand over his face, his pretty poofy blonde hair being poofy, wondering how did he have to end up with this. The background is that of just a regular high school setting, outside at lunch in a courtyard. Almost like they go to the same school…except they don’t!
Page 3: 10 panels (I know, ambitious. Let’s just try it out ok?)
Panel 1: Top left corner, a little box panel. You see a school setting in the background, as they are in a classroom that isn’t used much. There is a bookshelf in the background and some boxes piled up behind Tanya. She is at the bottom right of the corner, spacing out and thinking about what she and us saw on the first page. The voice of the Random Girl who is the Vice President appears offscreen. It’s just a speech bubble.
Random Girl who is the Vice President (RGVP): And that’s my report for today. What do you think Tanya?
Tanya: . . .
Panel 2: Same background scenery again. Difference is that Tanya has noticed that she is being talked to and is surprised by the voice. Very exaggerated reaction, cause it’s so cute and funny. Exclamation mark is used to exaggerate Tanya’s surprise.
RGVP (Burst bubble) : Tanya!
Tanya: !
Panel 3: POV has changed. Instead of a side view of Tanya, she is directly in front of us, sitting in a chair at a table. To the left of her is a person but they are covered in darkness and don’t seem to display any kind of gender. This is because Tanya herself doesn’t pay attention to anyone, as she herself isn’t living as her real self. There is whiteboard behind her now on her left and the door is on her right. Tanya is being condemned by the RGVP, but is handling it with a professional smile on her face.
RGVP: Pay attention, alright?
Tanya: My apologies, you know I doze off sometimes.
RGVP: So what do you suppose we do?
Panel 4: Focus in on Tanya again. She seriously answers the issue and her expression is almost like a fixed robot, no hesitation.
Tanya: Well, the issue seems to be caused by a lack of communication between the two clubs. Ask them to sit down with one another and talk it out. All we can hope for is that they can come to an understanding with one another.
Panel 5: Off screen voice answers, while Tanya is gracefully getting up from her seat, with her eyes closed.
RGVP: That’s perfect! I knew you would have the answer!
Panel 6: Perspective changes, as you see almost like a wide shot of the classroom. It’s half of a classroom, half a storage place. Tanya and everyone is sitting at a long table together. Including her, there are five other people there, but they are all blurry shadows as that is how Tanya sees them.
Tanya: Since that’s the end of it, let’s end our meeting for today.
Panel 7: Off screen everyone answers. Focus on Tanya, wearing a natural but forced smile on her face.
The rest of the student body council: Thank you for your work!
Tanya (thought bubble): I’m Tanya, the president of Jefferson High School’s Student Body Council.
Panel 8: No box around this panel, as I feel there is no need and gives a bit of variety. Girl shadow person is saying goodbye to Tanya and they are both waving goodbye, as Tanya has her left hand to the doorknob.
Random Girl who is the Secretary: Bye Bye!
Tanya: See you soon!
Tanya (thought bubble): Grades, popularity, admiration…
Panel 9: A close up of Tanya in the bottom left corner of the page. She is doing a hair flip, for fun and because she’s just being silly and cute even if it is a bit arrogant.
Tanya (thought bubble): I technically had it all
Panel 10: Creak sound on the right of the panel. She has closed the door and this is a side shot of her from up above. She is standing in a hallway and her eyes are hidden over her hair, as there is a genuine smile on her face.
SFX: CREAK
Tanya (thought bubble): But in reality…
Page 4: 7 panels
Panel 1: No box, just chibi. By chibi I mean Tanya has converted into her chibi form. Her eyes are just circles and her mouth is derpy. She is drawn almost crudely and roughly but with a bit of polish, with a big head and a small body because that is the definition of le chibi!
Tanya (Thought Bubble): I just wanna cut lose!
Panel 2: In half chibi mode. Basically with Tanya’s regular body, but with the chibi’s form goofiness, as her tongue is sticking out and she has stars in her eyes. She has a notebook out and is scribbling in it.
Tanya (Thought Bubble): No responsibilities! No worries to stress about! Just to be me to do whatever I want whenever the hell I want!
Panel 3: Overshot view of Tanya’s sketch in her notebook. It is a picture of a cute drawing she made of cat witch. A little scrawny drawing with colors: grey, yellow, purple, and black in it, but it will do. It’s like…half decent.
Tanya (Thought Bubble): And to pursue the things I wanna do!
Panel 4: Picture of half the high school and the city. She is outside the school, skipping down the steps in a fiery, silly craze. In front of her, since she’s in chibi mode, the world looks like a rainbow, meanwhile behind her, the high school is drawn with bleak colors. In front of some lockers, a small shadow boy is being bullied by taller shadow boys.
Tanya (Thought Bubble): This is my dream!
Panel 5: She is walking down the streets in chibi mode, looking at the world all high strong and tough and powerful, with the sunlight dazzling down on her. Chibi mode is intensified, as she is in extreme happiness mode. The setting around her is of the sun shining down on her, as she is walking on the sidewalk, with some toony looking cars to the right of her and tall buildings to the right of them.
Tanya (Though Bubble): And I will do anything to fight for it!
Panel 6: Tanya notices something and this makes her go into half chibi, half regular form. This is also shown by the surroundings of the city shifting from toony chibiness, to more of a modern, regular city look. Her regular human form is back, but her eyes and mouth are still in chibi mode. She as stopped walking down the sidewalk and is confused, with a ? above her head.
Tanya (Thought Bubble): So if opportunity comes knocking…
Panel 7: Wide shot panel. Shows off the busy street with the cars rushing by and people as well, and the tall buildings all around them. But these are all in outlines. Grey outlines with dark colors all around these areas, as they are seen for what they are now. Tanya in her regular form, looking across the street at a man with green hair and wearing all white. Slightly faded he is, but still present as some kind of blinding light makes him shine out among the rest of the scene. Tanya and him both stand out, as they are both in color amidst the rest of the area.
Tanya (Thought Bubble): why WOULDN’T I take the chance?
Page 5: 8 panels
Panel 1: Close up on Tanya. She is confused. Everything is outlined around her but not filled in.
Tanya (thought bubble): What the-?
Panel 2: A close up on Kilo’s face. He is dipping his hat, so half of his face is in the dark, leaving only his left eye, tip of his nose, and mouth visible.
Kilo: Come with me.
Panel 3: The same panel on page 4, panel 7, except tinier. Instead of them being there, a column of white light is there instead in both spots.
Panel 4: A dark panel, but with a whoosh sound going on.
SFX: WHOOSH
Panel 5: Tanya is still moving in the black, but she’s just a straight line, being move at the speed of light, as a light.
Tanya (thought bubble) : Whaaa! What’s going on!?!?!
Panel 6: Tanya landed on to the ground, with a thump on her poor bottom. Surrounding her is some crystals, but she is too in pain to realize them, as her eyes are winching at the moment.
SFX: THUMP
Tanya: Ow…what was that?
Panel 7: Small panel. She has her eyes opened and they are wide.
Panel 8: She is saying wow and her eyes are shining in amazement. Make her eyes almost look like anime cute diamonds.
